A laid back Southern man is sentenced to two years in a rural prison, but refuses to conform. In the late 1990s, Buck hosted a weekly sports-news show, Goin' Deep, for Fox Sports Net cable. He also called horse racing and professional bass fishing events early in his Fox career, as well as the network's first Cotton Bowl Classic telecast in 1999.

Soon after arriving at Fox, Buck became the play-by-play man on the network's #4 NFL broadcast team, with Tim Green as his color commentator. After three years, he stopped doing NFL games to concentrate on his baseball duties full-time. In 1996, he was named Fox's lead play-by-play voice for Major League Baseball, teaming with Tim McCarver, who had previously worked with his father on CBS. That year, he became the youngest man to do a national broadcast (for all nine innings and games, as a network employee as opposed to simply being a representative of one of the participating teams) for a World Series, surpassing Sean McDonough, who called the 1992 World Series for CBS at the age of 30. McDonough had replaced Jack Buck as CBS' lead baseball play-by-play man after he was fired in late 1991. . We already knew Joe well enough to know he simply wouldn’t do that; why didn’t Schlesinger know him as well?
[…]Alienation and exploitation condition each other; they are linked to each other. It is the very essence of Marx’s insight not to isolate man’s alienation from economic conditions and trends—as Hegel and the followers of philosophical idealism had done—but to trace alienation to the basic structure and development of capitalist economy and society. Peckinpah's innovative quick-cut editing (of a staggering 330,000 feet of film) and his use of slow motion introduced a new vocabulary to violence, with that final sequence a near ballet of bullets and blood. And though Sergio Leone had introduced what's come to be called the dirty Western in 1964—with A Fistful of Dollars starring Clint Eastwood—Peckinpah's Oscar-winning screenplay (written with Walon Green and Roy N. Sickner) added existential layers: the angst of encroaching corporate America (via the railroads) and the ultimate meaninglessness of the lives of the film's central outlaws: Pike Bishop (William Holden), Dutch Engstrom (Ernest Borgnine), Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan), Sykes (Edmond O'Brien), the Gorch brothers (Ben Johnson and Warren Oates) and Angel (Jaime Sanchez)—as merciless a bunch of "heroes" as American cinema had produced. The show's debut on June 15, 2009, made national headlines due to the tension-filled banter between Buck and guest Artie Lange, a comedian from The Howard Stern Show, who made several jokes at Buck's expense. Two more episodes aired in 2009. In March 2010, Buck told a St. Louis radio station that HBO might be planning to cancel Joe Buck Live, adding that he "won't really miss" the program and that it involved "a lot more effort and hassle than I ever expected". A place for the community of dog lovers, breeders and pet breeders worldwide The film's biggest villain, of course, is the railroad man, Harrigan, who hires Thornton to track and kill Pike and his bunch. The carnage of the first shoot-out—when dozens of innocent townspeople are slaughtered—is his doing. Harrigan is the corporate capitalist—the sort of man Peckinpah hated, like the studio executives he was always battling. And by the way, Harrigan is also the one who ends up a success in the end, right? It's hardly ever pointed out that Harrigan gets what he was after—they are all dead.In Midnight Cowboy, both Joe Buck and Ratso experience these divisions that characterize alienation.

Buck has also appeared in various national television commercials for such clients as Holiday Inn and Budweiser beer. But it's essentially a love story—kind of a weird one—or a romantic triangle, between Pike, Dutch and Deke, who is the spurned lover; he was part of the crew, Pike's right hand, before getting caught and sent to prison. Deke's now hunting the bunch for Harrigan, with a crew of scurrilous bounty hunters, as a way of getting out of prison. Dutch has moved into Deke's spot. They're not gay, but they are certainly more emotionally attached to other men and really can't connect with women.
So you can't approach The Wild Bunch without seeing it as an artist—someone who did these terrible things—studying his own tendencies. The self-reflection of Pike, which William Holden accomplishes without speaking a word—What have I messed up here, who have I hurt, how did we end up here?—are things I'm sure Peckinpah thought about himself. The central code that exists between Pike and his men—that you support the men you ride with, no matter the atrocities they commit—is fundamental to the film. This image connects to Midnight Cowboy’s theme of alienation because it mirrors the loneliness felt by the main characters Joe & Ratso. Although Ratso isn’t without shelter, he is a squatter and doesn’t keep company until he meets Joe. Joe, while he did have a place, quickly feels disconnected in the big city and this image, in quite a shocking way, makes us feel the impact of alienation. The image is quite bright and saturated, a stark contrast to the subject matter it represents. Just like in Midnight Cowboy, Joe, once naive and cheerful, ends up with a sombre reality. There is nothing in the frame aside from the man sprawled on the pavement and a hint of cardboard in the upper-left corner. He seems to be alone in that specific location but he dominates the shot. He’s important to us, viewing the image, analyzing it, but unimportant in everyday, mundane circumstances. Similarly, Ratso was unimportant, ignored even (think coffee shop scene) by everyday people until he died in the bus and suddenly people were curious. Would they have acknowledged him on the streets? We all hate feeling alienated, we get appalled when people do it to us, when we witness it on others, but do we ever really do anything about it? Not just in regards to homeless people, but within a community, within family even? Here we have someone who stopped to take a picture, to document the event and raise awareness, but what happens after? Happy Canada Day! So it all begins at noon. In January 2005, Buck drew fire for his on-air comments during an NFL playoff game between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. After Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss simulated mooning the Green Bay crowd in the end zone, Buck called it a "disgusting act." The moon was actually a response to Packer fans, who traditionally moon the Vikings players aboard the team bus, which Buck did not mention. Buck's comment also indicated that he incorrectly believed that Moss had in fact mooned the fans. It prompted Red McCombs, then the owner of the Minnesota Vikings, to request that Buck be removed from covering their upcoming playoff game, saying that Buck's comments "suggested a prejudice that surpassed objective reporting." Buck also received criticism from other members of the media who felt he "over-reacted" and was being "inconsistent" given his network's history of programming. Buck was much more restrained in his call of the New York Jets' Isaiah Crowell using the football to simulate cleaning himself after defecation during a 2018 Thursday Night Football contest against the Cleveland Browns. "That will draw a flag every time," Buck simply commented. October 16, 2014 – Buck called Game 5 of the 2014 National League Championship Series for FOX, where Giants left fielder Travis Ishikawa hit a walk-off three run home run off of Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha to lift the Giants over the Cardinals by a score of 6–3, clinching the National League pennant for the Giants and advancing them to the World Series.
So while I don't think the film was a response to current events, when Pike Bishop says to the corrupt Mexican general Mapache [who offers to pay Pike for stealing a cache of American guns from the military], "We share very few sentiments with our government"—well, there were people seeing the nightly news footage of napalm being dropped on Southeast Asia and thinking the same thing. Unlike many of the Westerns that had come before, the patriotism is gone. Also in June 2015, Buck and co-announcer Greg Norman were criticized for their "mistake-filled, error-prone mess" in covering the 2015 U.S. Open in golf. In particular they were questioned for prematurely anointing Dustin Johnson as the winner "at the start of a back nine".

During Fox's broadcast of the 2002 World Series, Buck paid implicit tribute to his father, who had died a few months earlier (he had read the eulogy at his father's funeral) by calling the final out of Game 6 (which tied the series at 3–3, and thus ensured there would be a Game 7 broadcast the next night) with the phrase, "We'll see you tomorrow night." This was the same phrase with which Jack Buck had famously called Kirby Puckett's home run off Braves pitcher Charlie Leibrandt which ended Game 6 of the 1991 World Series. Since then, Joe has continued to use this phrase at appropriate times, including Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, in which the Boston Red Sox famously rallied off New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in the 9th inning to avoid elimination. When David Ortiz's walk-off home run finally won it for the Red Sox in the 12th inning, Buck uttered, "We'll see you later tonight," alluding to the fact that the game had extended into the early morning. He also used the phrase at the end of Game 6 of the 2011 World Series when the Cardinals' David Freese hit a walk-off home run in the 11th inning against the Rangers to send the series to a seventh game (it was actually 20 years and a day since Kirby Puckett's home run). The similarity of both the call and the game situation resulted in mentions on national news broadcasts. In 1994, Buck was hired by Fox, and at the age of 25 became the youngest man ever to announce a regular slate of National Football League games on network television. The first strong, authentic female characters I noticed in the genre, at least as written by men, were in the work of Larry McMurtry, who knew the cowboy world—he was raised on a ranch in Texas—and called bullshit on the mythology of the West. I was reading all of McMurtry's early books in college, even in high school, and I thought, Oh man, this guy is doing it. He opened a lot of doors for people like me, to look at what surrounded us, to see the bullshit mythology, as you call it, and move forward.
In 2014, Buck was named as the new host of NFL Films Presents, to coincide with the program's move from ESPN2 to Fox Sports 1. Midnight Cowboy (1969) - he film won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay; it is the only X-rated film to win an Oscar in any category, and one of two X-rated films to be nominated for an Oscar (the other being Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film A Clockwork Orange) “Jupiter Ascending” was released in 2015. The movie was written, directed and produced by Andy and Lana Wachowski. The pair were also responsible for hits including “The Matrix” and “V is for Vendetta”. The Wachowskis sort of based the movie on a book. They have said they were inspired by “The Odyssey” by Homer and “The Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum when writing the movie’s screenplay. The movie doesn’t really claim to be anything more than it is, however, a space opera. It’s filled with action but short on plot.In the movie’s final moments, Rico dies but his dream of Florida lives on with Joe. Through their friendship, Joe had found himself and was no longer alienated from the world; he had developed an honest identity as Rico’s companion. He was no longer pursuing his initial dream but completing Rico’s and not for selfish reasons. Although Rico died and Joe was ultimately alone, he was not alienated. Finally, he had connected with a fellow man.

On August 14, 2006, Buck was named the host of Fox's pregame NFL show, Fox NFL Sunday and postgame doubleheader show. According to the Nielsen ratings system, viewership was down for the entire season. Fox announced in March 2007 that Buck would no longer host Fox NFL Sunday in 2007, concentrating on play-by-play for the week's marquee game. As long as the success continues [for the alienated man], it often engenders a certain numbness toward the price the individual is paying, toward the fact that he has become estranged from himself. Only in periods of crisis does he become aware of alienation. Societies, too, often do not feel disturbed by forces of alienation. Only in critical phases of their history do they become alert to the problem.November 4, 2001 – Buck called Game 7 of the 2001 World Series for FOX, where Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzalez hit a walk-off single to center field off of Yankees closer Mariano Rivera to score Craig Counsell, giving the Diamondbacks their first World Series championship. Midnight Cowboy should have been about their [Joe Buck and Ratso] mutual self-discovery; about the process that took place as they learned to know each other. Modern man often finds it hard to be himself; he has become a stranger to himself. At the same time, he has become estranged, or alienated, from his fellow man. And finally, he experiences alienation from the world in which he lives.

The more we advance in this separation, the more we create the split within ourselves. Our society is in such a crisis today. This may be the reason why the word “alienation” has come so much into vogue. We have not enough time here to study the various manifestations of the crisis: the emptiness and meaninglessness of modern life, the terrible loneliness of the individual, his isolation and drifting, and so on. All of this has been described often enough, not only in sociological works but in such plays as Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and After the Fall, and in works by Tennessee Williams, Salinger, Kerouac, Updike, and many others. It has been reflected likewise in some of the basic works on existentialist philosophy which take man, the total stranger, for their central theme and which emphasize that homelessness is man’s fate.

She has interplanetary royal blood and must claim her royal title of princess. The problem is that another royal family does not want Jupiter to claim the throne. There is a lot of action as Caine prevents Balem Abrasa from preventing Jupiter from taking the throne at any cost. Balem is played by Eddie Redmayne who won the Razzy for Worst Supporting Actor. Ironically, Redmayne won the Oscar that year for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything“. Fans of Redmayne won’t complain. He was only playing the part in “Jupiter Ascending” as it was written. The movie also stars Sean Bean as Stinger, a cocky Han Solo like character. Lots of action ensues as Caine Wise gets Jupiter Jones to her her rightful place on the universe’s throne. There's that other cowboy code, of freedom above all else. That don't-fence-me-in mentality has led to a lot of fencing out. Another 1960s film, Easy Rider, a Western in its own right—an ironic Western—has that brilliant scene with Jack Nicholson, around the campfire, and he's talking of freedom, and that's what it's all about. You're gonna get in a fight if someone says they're not for freedom. But if you look at the way life really works, we don't like freedom too much. We're more into repression.Once VHS came along in the late '70s, I started watching all of his movies again and again. I came to think of him essentially as a poet who instead of using metaphors being written down on the page, [they] were on the screen. Everything in his movies, when he was at his peak, was what it was, but it also had meaning beyond that. He made the film in 1968 and into 1969—a terrifically violent time in American history. How much of that played into the film? His friend Jim Silke told me he thought Sam never shot a single foot of didactic film. So I don't think he was intentionally going after an allegory of the 1960s. However, nothing happens in a vacuum, and this movie company went to Mexico to film The Wild Bunch just about the time Martin Luther King was assassinated. And then they wrapped up shortly after Robert Kennedy was shot. And in the middle—though no one in America knew it for a year or so—was the My Lai Massacre. Plus, we thought the Russians were going to blow the whole world up. It was scary times, and there was violence everywhere—I felt that as a kid.
The Wild Bunch also crushed the mythology of the Western. Nothing was the same after that film. There were a few normal Westerns with John Wayne, but they were mostly failures. His best work, I think, was in his last film, The Shootist, in 1976. Don Siegel did a great job with that, but I can't imagine it being made without The Wild Bunch coming first. In another show of irony, Rico immorally cons 20$ out of an unsuspecting Joe while arranging for the latter to meet with a holy man. This upsets Joe and triggers the flashbacks of him being baptized in the water as a frightened boy. Schlesinger here is probably commenting on religion’s use of fear to keep us all moral abiding devotees and how it seldom helps anything. Joe runs out on the holy man. What good was faith in God when the real world was miserable place to be, when you had to smash a telephone into a guy’s mouth for offering you a religious medallion instead of the cash you had asked for? For Joe, faith was useless. 9780743239738 0743239733 Midnight Cowboy, James Leo Herlihy 9780520224025 0520224027 The Price of Dissent - Testimonies to Political Repression in America , Bud Schultz 9780718523756 071852375X The Biferno Valley Survey - The Archaeological and Geomorphological Record , Graeme Barke
A spoiled heiress running away from her family is helped by a man who is actually a reporter in need of a story. We'd gotten away from Tom Mix and the idea of the white hat—or purely good hero—decades before that, but there was always a little something good in the characters. Pike and his group are killers, and they kind of get off on it. That opened the door to some really interesting films, including Peckinpah's own The Ballad of Cable Hogue and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid , as well as Eastwood's The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven .
Todd's prison connection felt like too much of a MacGuffin here. It was needed to move the plot forward, but the insane coincidence of thank god this random new guy has an uncle that has the power to pull off the most complex series of prison murders in history is a bit eye-rolling Visceral, bone-crunching brutality is so common now that it's hard to fathom the effect The Wild Bunch had on its first audiences. The film was polarizing—equally reviled (a few early viewers reportedly left the theater to throw up) and celebrated. Many in a new generation of filmmakers, including George Lucas and Martin Scorsese, were thrilled by it. Kathryn Bigelow, who would go on to direct the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker, described its effect as a paradigm shift: "It took all my semiotic Lacanian deconstructivist saturation and torqued it." Quentin Tarantino has called the final shoot-out "a masterpiece beyond compare."The Wild Bunch was a revolutionary anti-hero bloodfest for sure, but hadn't Arthur Penn introduced similar things in Bonnie and Clyde in 1967? Bonnie and Clyde certainly took the anti-hero to a new level, and the violence in Penn's film was groundbreaking. But there was something artistic about it—particularly that final shoot-out, which was almost like a sex scene between Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. Peckinpah didn't want any of that; he wanted agony and dirt. He was a fan of Leone's Eastwood films, the ones where if a fly landed on a guy's face while he was talking, it stayed there. You can almost smell the bodies in those films.

As critic Roger Ebert, an early devotee, wrote: "The mantle of violence is passing from Pike and his kind, who operated according to a certain code, to a new generation that kills more impersonally, as a game, or with machines."On September 8, 1998 Buck called Mark McGwire's 62nd home run that broke Roger Maris' single-season record. The game was nationally televised live in prime time on Fox. It was a rarity for a nationally televised regular season game to not be aired on cable since the end of the Monday/Thursday Night Baseball era on ABC in 1989. October 27, 2011 – Buck was the play-by-play announcer for FOX's coverage of the 2011 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers. Buck called David Freese's triple in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 7, as well as Freese's walk-off home run in the 11th inning to keep the Cardinals' championship hopes alive by extending it to a game 7. Buck's call of Freese's home run:
