The African Queen is well-stocked with tinned food, and carries a cargo of two hundredweight of blasting gelignite. It also holds two large tanks of oxygen and hydrogen. Rose is inflamed with patriotism, and also filled with the desire to avenge the insults the Germans piled on her brother. It occurs to her that the main German defence against a British attack by water is the gunboat Königin Luise, which guards the fictional Lake Wittelsbach[1] into which the Ulanga feeds. She asks Allnutt if he can make the gelignite into a makeshift torpedo. Allnutt replies that that is not possible, but after some thought, he concludes that by loading the gelignite inside the emptied tanks, putting the tanks into the bow of the launch, and rigging a detonator, they could turn the African Queen itself into a sort of large torpedo. Allnutt is inclined to laugh off the idea, but he gives in to Rose's greater strength of will and the two of them set off down the Ulanga, Rose steering and Allnutt maintaining the launch's ancient, balky, wood-burning steam engine. Brother and sister, Reverend Samuel and Miss Rose Sayer, are British Christian missionaries. They are reliant upon Canadian Charlie Allnut, who owns and operates a run-down river boat called the African Queen, for mail and supplies, Charlie who works as a mechanic at a mine one day away along the river The doomed church and the village of Kungdu were built on the shore of Lake Albert at Port Butiaba, Uganda, up near the border with Democratic Republic of the Congo. Morley’s funeral was filmed in Democratic Republic of the Congo itself (then simply the Congo), on a hillside about two and a half miles upriver from the village of Biondo, on the Ruiki – the river which stands in for the ‘Ulanga’ in the early scenes of the Queen chugging down to confront the Germans.
The two lovers are separated in the storm, but both are captured by the Germans the next day. They are brought before the captain of the Königin Luise to be tried as spies. Both refuse to say how they came to the lake, but the captain sees "African Queen" written on Rose's life-saver and deduces that they must be the mechanic and the missionary's sister from the mysteriously missing launch. He decides it would be uncivilised to execute them, so he flies a flag of truce and delivers them to the British naval commander, who dismissively sends them to separate tents under guard while he takes his newly arrived reinforcements out to sink the Königin Luise. Having succeeded in this, he sends Rose and Allnutt to the coast to speak to the British Consul, where he advises Allnutt to enlist in the British Army. Rose and Allnutt agree that when they reach the coast they will ask the Consul to marry them. The story ends with the narrator's comment that "Whether or not they lived happily ever after is not easily decided." The Queen going over the falls is a model made by monks from the local monastery at Ponthierville in Democratic Republic of the Congo (nuns made the tiny Bogart and Hepburn), filmed on the falls above the town, while the German fort at ‘Shona’ was filmed back at Worton Hall. Original release german movie poster. Expertly backed on japanese rice paper. Fold splits and a small strip of paper loss in the bottom right have been repaired. The poster was carefully and very well backed, with no attempt to make it look 'mint'. Tiny IMO, the only time that movies should be remade is when the movie was basically a good story, but something just wasn't done right the first time, and a remake could potentially fix the problem. For example, if someone was miscast in the original version, then a remake might make sense because it could be a better movie with the right actor in. For a film made in 1951, there’s a surprising amount of location filming in Africa – though this seems to have been an excuse for macho director John Huston to go hunting elephants (see Peter Viertel’s thinly-disguised book of the shoot, White Hunter, Black Heart, or Clint Eastwood’s film version).

The African Queen (1951) is the uncomplicated tale of two companions with mismatched, opposites attract personalities who develop an implausible love affair as they travel together downriver in Africa around the start of World War I. This quixotic film by director John Huston, based on the 1935 novel of the same name by C. S. Forester, is one of the classics of Hollywood adventure filmmaking. The original African Queen captained by Humphrey Bogart in the Oscar-winning 1951 film is once again cutting her way through the languid, life-giving waters of the river Nile, according to reports Queen Charlotte was the wife of George III and, like him, of German descent. An amazing romance-adventure classic highlighted by the brilliant performances of Bogart and Hepburn. Oscar winner Bogart's Charlie is a broken man who finds true hope and happiness in Hepburn's Rose. Rose finds love and meaning from Charlie. It's adorable to see them call each other "Missus" and "Mr. Almont" even when we know that they love each other. Even when they have their "first quarrel" near the end of the picture, we know that their lives have changed forever as a result of the other person. It's a film about true love. This is also a very funny film, which was a shock to director Huston. Bogart's stomach growling scene early on in the film is a hoot. More humor commences as both stars play off of each other wonderfully. The scenary is beautiful. No film has captured the essence and importance of nature better than this classic. This is the film that sparked other romance adventures such as "Romancing the Stone" and "Six Days and Seven Nights." Before you view those newer installments, you better check out the one and true original classic. The 'East African Campaign' holds a peculiar position in the public memory of the First World War.
