Alabama at Auburn: “Kick Six"Nov. 30, 2013Perhaps the South’s most heated rivalry took on extra significance in its 78th meeting with a spot in the SEC championship on the line. In a matchup with no shortage of big plays, Auburn crawled back from trailing all game to tie the score at 28 with 32 seconds left. Alabama drove to the Auburn 38-yard line and could have played for overtime, but instead lined up for a 57-yard kick. The kick fell short, and Tigers cornerback Chris Davis caught the ball near the back of the end zone and headed up the left sideline for an 100-yard kick return for a touchdown, giving Auburn a 34–28 win and sending Jordan–Hare Stadium into hysteria.All-Time Season Score: 15.9045 Key Season Score Element: 8 Bad Wins Best Win: Stanford 13, at USC 12 Worst Game: Stanford 7, Olympic Club 3

During his three seasons, the Buckeyes won 23 of 28 games, captured back-to-back Big Ten titles in 1954 and '55 and claimed the 1954 national championship. At 273 pounds, Parker was the biggest player the Baltimore Colts had ever drafted. "He blocked out the sun," Colts general manager Ernie Accorsi said. Clemson's passing attack had a few highlights but little consistency: Lawrence's 25-0 record as a starter is now 25-1 after a game that saw him complete just 18-of-37 passes for 234 yards with no touchdowns. Lawrence made a few plays with his legs, including scoring the first touchdown of the game, but he failed to get into a good rhythm with WRs Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross as he tried to match Burrow's production. It's hard to argue with this level of success, even at Division III. The coach with the highest winning percentage in the history of the game, Larry Kehres, coached at Mount Union. Under Kehres, the Purple Raiders won 54 straight games, an NCAA record, lost one, then won 55 straight. Kehres retired in 2012, but the Purple Raiders extended their string of Ohio Athletic Conference titles to 24 before falling short in 2016.OT Jonathan Ogden, UCLA (1992-95) Ogden combined size (6-8, 310) and strength (NCAA champion shot-putter) in a way that few offensive linemen have before or since. His coach, Terry Donahue, once told The (Baltimore) Sun that on his recruiting visit to the Ogden home in Washington, D.C., "I was just struck by how massive he really was." Donahue coaxed Ogden across the continent to Westwood, where he played on two Pac-10 championship teams and, just as important (according to most Bruins), Ogden's teams went 4-0 against USC. In his last two seasons, Ogden not only helped make a two-time 1,000-yard rusher out of Karim Abdul-Jabbar, he allowed a total of only two sacks. He was an All-American and won the Outland Trophy in 1995.

Cornell played half of its games against teams that weren’t even part of the official college football world, but it still managed to come up with four excellent wins to get on the list. The win is a crowning achievement for Ed Orgeron and the LSU coaching staff, especially offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger and passing game coordinator Joe Brady, for the way they were able to transform not just the scheme of their offense but the mentality of the entire team. The aggressiveness that comes with an up-tempo spread attack was adopted on every side of the ball, and their relentlessness ultimately became the defining quality of their dominance.  College Football Data Warehouse. The Buffaloes have had their moments, just not enough of them. Fred Folsom won so much a century ago (21 straight from 1908 to 1912) that they named the field after him. From the end of World War II into the 21st century, Colorado mostly had the misfortune to play in the same conference as Oklahoma and Nebraska. Take 1971, when they finished third in the nation -- behind the Huskers and the Sooners. Bill McCartney led the Buffs to a share of the 1990 national championship, a feat few have matched anywhere; and Rick Neuheisel and Gary Barnett continued to win at a high level through 2005. The Quakers are no longer a national power because they participate in Division I Football Championship Subdivision If you are in your 20s or younger, you've never known the Badgers not to contend for the Big Ten championship. Since the arrival of Barry Alvarez in 1990 and through the tenures of Bret Bielema and current coach Paul Chryst, Wisconsin has been a winner. It is a story made even more astounding if you are old enough to remember the previous iterations of Badgers football, which had signed a long-term lease in the bottom half of the Big Ten. Wisconsin did enjoy some success after World War II, going to three Rose Bowls in 11 seasons from 1952 to 1962; but from 1993 forward, only USC (seven) has celebrated more New Year's Days in Pasadena than Wisconsin (six).

The first great "Western" power dominated what we now know as the Big Ten through the 1920s, winning seven of its nine national titles from 1901 to 1933. The Wolverines didn't fare as well in the middle 50 years of college football, but with the arrival of Bo Schembechler in Ann Arbor for the centennial season in 1969, Michigan reestablished itself as one of the sport's marquee programs. And if the Wolverines can figure out how to beat their archrivals in Columbus, Michigan will continue its climb back up this ranking. An *asterisk denotes the consensus national champion, that is, fans would most recognize that team as the national title holder. Yet Munoz may be the greatest what-if on one of the great what-if teams of college football. Munoz suffered a left knee injury in the 1979 season-opening 21-7 victory over Texas Tech that required surgery. He missed the remainder of the regular season; surely he would have made a difference in the 21-21 tie against Stanford that prevented USC from sharing No. 1 with Alabama for a second straight season. In fewer than four months, Munoz, through sheer will and arduous rehab, returned to the field for the Rose Bowl. NEW ORLEANS -- No. 1 LSU completed one of the most impressive seasons in college football history on Monday night, storming back from a first-half deficit to take down No. 3 Clemson in the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship. The 42-25 win for LSU was a fitting finale for Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, who finished one of the greatest individual seasons of all-time by shattering even more records in the game that gave LSU its first national championship since the 2007 season.

There were a few great wins, but they were offset by a whole lot of teams that fall into the Bad Win category. Five of the eight victories were bad, and there was a tie against Yale on the road in the season finale. The D gave up just five points all year, coming in a 27-5 win over a strong Cornell squad.Miami staked its claim to its first national championship by defeating previously unbeaten and top-ranked Nebraska. The Huskers hadn’t been challenged all year, but found themselves down 17–0 early before making a furious comeback. Jeff Smith’s 24-yard touchdown got Nebraska within one at 31–30, but quarterback Turner Gill’s pass to Smith on a two-point try was swatted down. Had Nebraska kicked the extra point and played for a tie, it probably would have won the national championship. Tom Osborne would have to wait another decade for that elusive title.

You may be surprised that the school that put four players on this team hasn't won a national championship since 1976. Dartmouth didn't beat Yale until 1935; in 1937, it didn't accept an invitation to the Rose Bowl; and in 1940, it didn't score more points than Cornell but won the game anyway -- the famous "Fifth Down Game," which Cornell forfeited after learning its 7-3 victory hinged on a touchdown scored on fifth down. All that happened under the watch of Red Blaik, who left for Army after the 1940 season. Since becoming a charter member of the Ivy League in 1956, Dartmouth has won or shared 18 conference titles under five different coaches. No Ivy team has won more.

RB Bo Jackson, Auburn (1982-85) Rushing yards: 4,303 | Rushing TDs: 43 | Yards per carry: 6.6 Nearly four decades later, college football remains on a first-name basis with the 1985 Heisman winner. As a freshman, Jackson took the same uniform number, 34, that junior Herschel Walker wore at Georgia, and quickly proved himself worthy of the number. His "Bo Over the Top" touchdown leap broke a nine-game losing streak in the Iron Bowl, Bear Bryant's last. Although Bo also brought Herschel to mind with his combination of speed and power, Bo, unlike Herschel, had a little shimmy when he needed it. Auburn retired No. 34 in 1992; as if we didn't know, no one could fill that jersey. Throughout college football history, the one and only goal of every team has been to win a national championship. But unfortunately for the other 129 FBS teams, only one team can actually be crowned champions.. Over the course of NCAA history, there have been a lot of great college football teams, but some of them didn't finish the job and win an NCAA championship and are remembered for. To be rated this high when it has been 52 years since you shared a Big Ten title, let alone a national championship, tells you how good the Golden Gophers once were. In the 1920s, Minnesota unleashed an in-state freak of nature named Bronko Nagurski on an unsuspecting sport. In the decade before World War II, under taciturn head coach Bernie Bierman, Minnesota used a brutish style of play to win three of the first six Associated Press national championships.

Michigan State went 10-1 and won the UPI national championship – and had a better season than the AP champ. Bama tied 7-7 against a fantastic Tennessee team, and opened the season with a loss on the road to Georgia, but closed strong with a blowout win over Auburn and handed Nebraska its only loss in the Orange Bowl.Orgeron blamed the bad field position for the slow start, but he also pointed to offensive adjustments once his staff saw how defensive coordinator Brent Venables and Clemson planned to stop Burrow and the passing attack. Part of the adjustments included using Burrow as a key part of the rushing game, so when Clemson's defense was loaded up against LSU's wide receivers in the red zone, there were opportunities for the star quarterback make plays with his legs.All-Time Season Score: 16.4300 Key Season Score Element: 4 Quality Wins Best Win: Princeton 21, at Chicago 18 Worst Game: Princeton 22, Swarthmore 13

Where are the great wins? It was an unbeaten season, but five of the nine victories came against teams with losing records or weren’t at the higher level. Only Princeton provided a problem, and that was the lone road game. Overall, it’s about a weak a national championship resumé as it gets. The Broncos are latecomers to national prominence. But give them credit. As a junior college, as a small college, as a I-AA school (including a national title in 1980) and in the Group of 5, all the Broncos do is win. They own one of the great upsets of this or any generation, the 43-42 overtime defeat of Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, and a true Bronco bristles at calling that victory an upset. Some very good coaches (Houston Nutt, Dirk Koetter, Chris Petersen) have come out of Boise. But none of them win as much off the blue turf as they did on it. They have made a habit of winning at Whitewater from the beginning. The Warhawks won or shared the first two titles (1913 and 1914) in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and they have won 34 more ever since. Over the past half-century, Whitewater has continued to set the bar higher and continues to leap over it. Since 2007, the Warhawks have won six Division III championships and nine conference titles. LB Jack Ham, Penn State (1968-70) Tackles: 251 | Blocked kicks: 4 One of the players who gave Penn State the name Linebacker U. came to State College as an afterthought, getting a scholarship in Joe Paterno's second signing class only after a recruit who had committed to the Nittany Lions went elsewhere. By the end of his freshman year, the quiet, hardworking Ham had established himself as the bell cow of the recruiting class. In Ham's three seasons on the varsity, Penn State went 29-3. All three losses came in his senior season, when the All-American made 91 tackles, intercepted four passes, and blocked three kicks. There weren’t too many problems, partly because there weren’t too many good teams on the slate. However, there were two big wins to get it done – Illinois handed Chicago its only loss of the season, and the 9-6 win at Iowa was terrific. The offense wasn’t anything special, but it was an unbeaten season with no points allowed in the last five games.

Michigan State had way too tough a time against a miserable Oregon State team, but it also rolled by strong Syracuse, Penn State and Notre Dame squads. The only two close games were on the road – the weird game against the Beavers on the road, and a 14-7 close call at Purdue. The defense was fantastic, allowing 14 points or fewer in every game. The Crimson Tide, fourth on the all-time wins list and No. 1 in titles, have cemented themselves atop this list with five national championships under Nick Saban to go with the five that Bear.

Take this College Football quiz! New quizzes emailed daily As with its Ivy brethren, Penn reached this ranking on the strength of its teams in the first 50 years of the sport. Poetry could have been written about the Quakers team that went 15-0 in 1897, a feat that no FBS team matched until Clemson last season. The 12-0 team in 1904 wowed 'em too. That said, the Quakers were one of the last Ivies to maintain their stature as a national power into the postwar era. Under head coach George Munger, Penn finished in the top 20 six times during the 1940s and had such appeal that it signed one of two national TV contracts in the early 1950s. In the Ivy League, Penn has won or shared 17 titles since 1982, more than any other school.

Malcolm Emmons/USA TODAY SportsDE Bubba Smith, Michigan State (1964-66) We take size for granted now, but when Smith lined up at defensive end for the Spartans in his junior and senior seasons, the first two years of fully legal two-platoon football, his 6-foot-7, 283-pound frame represented a quantum leap. In his senior year, the other three All-American defensive linemen averaged 6-3, 221. Smith, an east Texas native and an African American, came along too soon to play in the Southwest Conference. He went to Michigan State and, with 11 other black starters, helped lead the Spartans to share the 1965 and 1966 national titles. In his last two seasons there, Michigan State went 19-1-1 and gave up a total of 175 points, or 8.1 points per game. Smith was an All-American in 1965 and 1966.The Aggies had a long history of playing second fiddle to Texas in the Southwest Conference and the Big 12 South, so they up and made the leap to the Southeastern Conference in 2012, much as Arkansas had done two decades earlier. And that made a difference. In the SEC West, the Aggies play second fiddle to Alabama. And LSU. And Auburn. Texas A&M has been cursed with a long history of goodness in a sport where only greatness is revered. Aside from R.C. Slocum's run in the 1990s, Bear Bryant's in the 1950s and Homer Norton's just before World War II, Texas A&M has lived a life of above average. Jimbo Fisher, over to you.RB Herschel Walker, Georgia (1980-82) Rushing yards: 5,259 | TDs: 52 | Rushing yards per game: 159.4 If not Brown, Walker might be the player whom every college running back is measured against. He ran for 1,616 yards with 15 touchdowns as a freshman in 1980, leading the Bulldogs to a 12-0 record and national championship. Walker ran for 150 yards with two touchdowns -- after separating his shoulder -- in a 17-10 win over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. He ran for 1,891 yards as a sophomore and 1,752 as a junior, when he won the 1982 Heisman Trophy. During his three-year collegiate career, Walker set 41 Georgia, 16 SEC and 11 NCAA records. The Bulldogs went 33-3 during his three seasons.DT Joe Greene, North Texas (1966-68) In the East Texas of the early 1960s, not even a Joe Greene could break through the color line erected by the Southwest Conference. Texas A&M coach Gene Stallings tried to convince the Aggies' administration to bring Greene to College Station. Greene went to North Texas State, as it was then known. He co-opted the Mean Green's nickname, and by his senior season, the 6-foot-4, 274-pound Greene had dominated his competition so thoroughly that he made the All-America team despite playing in the Missouri Valley Conference. He remains North Texas' only All-American.

Running backs Jim Brown and Herschel Walker, both multisport stars, combined a sprinter's speed with a linebacker's physicality. If you caught them, they let you know it.LSU's offense did not dominate for the entire game. In factm, poor field position and some strong early play by Clemson's defense limited the scoring opportunities early on. Clemson had a 17-7 lead in the second quarter before Burrow finally started to heat up, but once he got rolling, there was no stopping the hottest hand in college football. Burrow linked up with wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase for 147 yards in the first half alone, and the Biletnikoff Award winner finished the game with nine catches for 221 yards and two touchdowns, which is a new CFP National Championship record for receiving yards. * Southern California’s participation in the 2004 championship was vacated by the NCAA Committee on Infractions.

The next time you want to complain about some SEC team scheduling a cupcake, try this for your 1908 national champion. LSU started out the season beating the Young Men’s Gymnastic Club of New Orleans 41-0, and followed it up by whacking around Jackson Barracks of New Orleans 81-5. However, LSU also handed Auburn its only loss of the season, and outscored teams 443-11.It was a split national championship season with Stanford winning one part, and Alabama taking another – Bama had the better year. The two teams handed each other their only blemish in a 7-7 Rose Bowl tie, but Stanford was also able to get by a strong USC team on the road and a good Washington squad. The problem? It was cupcake city with six wins over teams that weren’t officially recognized by the higher end of the college football world.CB Rod Woodson, Purdue (1983-86) Tackles: 445 | Interceptions: 11 | Kickoff return yards: 1.535 You could search long and hard for something Woodson couldn't do as a Boilermaker. He set 13 individual records while playing corner, returning kicks and taking reps at running back and wide receiver. He was named All-American in 1986. Oh, yeah, the 6-0, 195-pound Woodson also set an NCAA record in the 60-meter hurdles and won five Big Ten track championships. The only thing Woodson didn't do on the football field? The Boilermakers went 16-26-1 in his four seasons. Which, if you think about it, makes Woodson's star shine even brighter. So with all of that in mind, we’re ranking the 150 greatest national champions of all-time based on how good their seasons were. The CFN Season Formula is about straight numbers, wins, losses, point totals and strengths of schedules to measure just how strong a campaign really was, and this isn’t an opinion of how good the teams might have been. And then there’s the problem of just how fatally flawed the system for determining a champion used to be. It’s not like anyone could watch three screens of games in 1869 – or 1969. Maryland – who got a few historical national title nods, but not from the ones that mattered at the time – beat the Vols in the Sugar Bowl to finish an unbeaten 10-0, but both the AP and UPI named Tennessee the national champ before that happened. Worst of all, there were a whole slew of okay victories over winning teams, but none over anyone who finished with fewer than three losses and a tie.
